Launching Surface Matter

We've launched an e-commerce platform for Surface Matter, a Certified B Corp supplying sustainable design materials to designers and architects across the UK. Surface Matter marked 10 years in business in 2023, and represents surfaces including Richlite, Durat, Plasticiet, Pierreplume, and Skatelite.

The site had to go beyond standard e-commerce. Designers and architects don't only buy materials — they need to understand them: technical specs, sustainability credentials, performance characteristics, and how they look in finished projects. The platform had to support both specification-driven searches and inspiration-led browsing.

We built the site on Craft Commerce with a product database that covers each material in depth. Every product has detailed technical specifications, sustainability information, and project galleries showing the material in use. Surface Matter's B Corp positioning — "materials used better" and "change shouldn't mean waste" — shaped the content model throughout.

Architects can download data sheets and request samples alongside reading about the environmental benefits and manufacturing process. Each material has the room to communicate both its technical properties and its broader context.
